Eighth Grade

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2

8th grade is an exciting time of growth in the life of PVCS students.  It is a busy year filled with challenging academics, spiritual maturing, competitive sports, engaging field trips and unforgettable memories.  Our goal is to prepare our students for an easy transition into whichever high school they choose, whether it be private or public.  They will leave our program prepared and ready to excel in the next phase of their education.  We encourage students to develop and utilize the talents God gave them to become leaders in their future schools.  The staff is committed to help the students grow spiritually and academically throughout this final year at PVCS.

Bible – Students begin their day with Bible class every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.  They also have chapel every Friday.

Math – This year we will be continuing with Glencoe curriculum.  It is a challenging book that will give students a solid foundation in preparation for the more complex concepts of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry in high school.  This curriculum gives substantial review of the fundamental principles of mathematics as it introduces new and challenging concepts.  The goal this year is to help each student develop a firm understanding of the mathematical concepts necessary to excel in upper level math.

Language Arts – In addition to grammar, vocabulary, book reports and projects, students will be spending a large part of this year developing their analytical writing skills.  Their ability to clearly articulate themselves in the form of a written essay is a crucial skill that must be mastered as students move into high school and college.

Latin – Latin is a highly organized and logical language.  Over half of the words in the English language are derived from Latin.  It is a prevalent language in the fields of law and medicine as well.  Therefore, the study of this unique language is extremely beneficial to students.  It improves vocabulary, increases standardized test scores, and also provides a solid base for learning other languages.

US History – The students will study US History this year in preparation for their trip to Washington, DC and New +York later in the year.  They will cover the development of the United States from the history of early exploration through modern times.  Students will be able to recognize and understand the influence of the Christian faith in American history.

Physical Science – Students will be using Bob Jones physical science curriculum.  This is a challenging book that provides a fascinating introduction into physics and chemistry.  It gives students a substantial foundation for the more advanced high school sciences such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Students are required to complete a science project and research paper during this course.  They will also have lab opportunities for more hands-on experiences.

Speech – Students will have Speech Communication class once a week where they will be taught the art of public speaking.  They will develop and present a variety of speeches during the year, individually and in groups.

Electives (Music/Art/Computer) – 8th grade students will have the opportunity to take 2 full semesters of one elective in order to advance their skills in that particular area.

Field Trips:

-Volunteer at Operation Christmas Child Processing Center

-Tour of local engineering company

-Middle School Christmas ice skating trip

-Magic Mountain graduation trip

-Washington, DC/New York trip

**The beginning of the year is packed full of fundraising for the unforgettable Washington, DC trip in March.  Our students often raise at least half of the cost, however, every year there are 2-3 students who pay for their trip entirely with fundraising!  Our school has been chosen to lay the wreath at Arlington National Cemetery for the last nine years.  It is an incredible experience for our students and their families.
