“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
Fourth grade is an exciting year of learning and adventure for PVCS students as they prepare for their last year in elementary school!
Bible: This year, our focus is on the life and work of Jesus and His apostles, and how we can emulate Christ’s character in everything we do through the power of the Holy Spirit. We will memorize Bible verses on a weekly basis and take part in daily class prayer.
Math: There are many mathematical concepts students will master this year, including but not limited to multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions, common factors, and measurements. We will drill our multiplication facts (x1 through x12) weekly, as fourth graders should be comfortable with these within the first few weeks of school.
Grammar: We will build upon students’ foundation of language and writing skills to improve their reading comprehension as well as their written communication. We will analyze different parts of speech, learn about the components of an excellent research report, and practice reading for understanding.
Science: Underlying everything we will study this year is the magnificence of the Lord’s creation. From forces and energy, to the moon and Earth’s oceans, we will see how God has intentionally and precisely made everything around us to bring Him glory. This will be the first year that students will complete an at-home science project and report for our school Science Fair!
Social Studies: We begin with an overview of all 50 states, laying a foundational understanding of the nation’s geography and history. We then delve deeper into California’s rich history and diverse geography. Our curriculum covers the Native American populations, the Missions, Ranchos, the Gold Rush, railroads, the Industrial Revolution, and other significant topics. Throughout the year, students will engage in multiple field trips that enhance their learning about these subjects. The highlight of our year will be the California Mission model and report project!
Literature: Throughout the year, students will read many exceptional novels, including Island of the Blue Dolphins, Caddie Woodlawn, and By the Great Horn Spoon. Each novel will culminate with a project to showcase different concepts such as character development, plot arcs, and summary.
Spelling: Our spelling curriculum, Wordly Wise, will encourage students to learn both the spelling and the meaning of over 250 words throughout the course of the school year. Weekly tests and review assignments will be given to gauge understanding.
